Do You Need A Life Coach?

What is Life Coaching?

Life coaching is about structuring your thinking, beliefs, feelings and behaviours to produce great outcomes in your life. It includes an assessment of your current life position and a discussion about your desires, values, goals and dreams, culminating in a life plan to get you moving in the right direction. Stephen Shaw has over 15 years of therapy, seminar and business experience and is a registered member of the British Psychological Society.

Do You Need A Life Coach?

It can be very useful to have a highly qualified and experienced expert light the way for you. Why learn from a decade of your own mistakes? For every concern, issue and challenge in life, there are lighted pathways, excellent pointers, profound markers. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience that you can draw upon through personal life coaching sessions.

How Do You Choose A Life Coach?

1. Usually has a degree in psychology or business.
2. Should have proven success in business and life.
3. Should have a decade of adult life experience.

Ideally, a life coach is someone who has found success, peace and happiness in life, and is now ready to mentor you toward a successful, peaceful and happy life.

Choosing A Life Coach

One of the primary roles of a life coach is to help you transform your dreams into reality. A goal is sometimes defined as a dream with a plan. Dreams are good friends, and once you add the action component, you are on your way to living your bliss!

There are many types of coaches. Business coaches help owners grow their small, medium or multi-national businesses. Executive and Management coaches assist employees to negotiate the corporate environment and navigate their way toward satisfying positions. Career coaches help people choose an optimum job or ideal career. Health coaches work in the area of eating lifestyle and exercise management.

Communication and Relationship coaches focus on the areas of language, influence, interpersonal dynamics, intimacy and connection. Spiritual coaches assist with personal development, paths to happiness, avenues to peace and understanding All That Is.

When you are deciding to see a life coach, ask yourself the following questions:

What kind of life coach am I looking for?
What area of my life do I wish to improve?
Have I checked the life coach's qualifications?
What kind of relevant experience has the life coach?
Did I feel a good rapport when we spoke on the phone?
How many sessions will I need to spend with the life coach?

Creating Change In Your Life

The GROW model is useful for creating change in your life:

Goal Setting
Reality checking
Options
Way Forward

Goals: where do you want to be?

Using a large piece of paper or notebook write down the key areas of your life: career, money, health, family, social, love, etc. These are areas of life that you feel are important to you. Now think about what you would like to experience, feel and see in these areas. Write this all down. Paint clear and detailed pictures of the final outcomes. Ask yourself this question: "How will I know when I have achieved this goal?"

Reality: where are you now?

Write down one or two goals to focus on. List what you have already done to move forward to these goals. What challenges have you overcome? What research have you done? Which experts have you spoken with? What have you achieved so far?

Options: how do you move from here to there?

Now it is time to brainstorm fresh, wild and crazy ideas. Daydream, discuss with significant others, do some research, consult experts, take long walks. Keep the question in your mind, then watch what comes across your path over the next few days and weeks. List all the ideas that come up with no criticism ... you can reality-check them at a later date.

Way Forward: what is your clear strategy?

Take your long list of ideas and reality-check them. Talk to significant others and experts. Shorten the list to feasible and workable ideas. Develop these into a concrete action plan: exactly what are you going to do to move forward? Have you broken the tasks into smaller tasks and action steps? Are there any time frames? Is there a budget? Who is supporting you emotionally? If you need additional support, then consult a life-coach.

Is Your Passion Your Profession?

Do you feel satisfied and fulfilled in your current job? Are you capitalising on your strengths and talents? Do you use your passion in your profession? Are you able to express the real you at work?

The big question is: How can you do what you love and make a good living from it? How can you turn your passion into a profession?

What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? What deserves your sense of humour, your ingenuity, your intelligence and your energy for half your waking life?

Often we lack direction because we did not have clear guidance at school or we were not exposed to the multitude of career opportunities. Perhaps we had an unsupportive or challenging home life or financial struggles. When our lives are not progressing as we would like, it is tempting to look back and blame many difficult life events and various people.

George Elliot said: "It's never too late to become the person you might have been."

At some point you need to sit down and take stock of your life. You may be stuck in a comfort zone: perhaps you are not happy in your current career but you know how to do your job well, you enjoy the people you work with, and you have the security of your monthly salary.

How do you overcome the psychological and emotional challenges of a life that is just good enough? How do you move toward a life that is fulfilling, stimulating and joyful? First thing is: you have to really want to make the change!

Anthony Robbins said: "It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped."

Soul Therapy in Bristol and London recommends life coaching as an excellent opportunity to explore your professional life and obtain clarity about the directions you could be taking. You can do the following exercise by yourself or with a life coach:

Make a list of your passions, interests and loves. What turns you on emotionally? What rocks your world? Then list your beliefs and values: things that are really important to you. Talk to family and friends to get further insights about yourself. Take as much time as you need to collate a comprehensive list about you.

Then look through your list for common threads and themes. Try to notice a few clear pictures forming. Once this exercise is complete, begin to think about the type of job or career that would ideally match you. Once your destination is clear, it is just a matter of working out the concrete action steps to arrive there.

Here are some questions to help you in this exercise:

What do you enjoy most in your current job?
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
Do you prefer working indoors or outdoors?
Do you prefer being left alone or being more interactive?
Which position or person in your company do you admire?
If money was not important, what would you do for a job?
If you died tomorrow, what would your regrets be?
What positions, jobs and careers have you researched?
Have you looked in magazines, newspapers and online, and spoken to other people, to learn about various careers?

Remember: If you find a job you love, you will never work again.
