Weight Loss Frequently Asked Questions

How important is exercise?

Do you know that 80% of attaining your ideal body weight and shape comes from intelligent eating ... and only 20% from exercise? In our exercise and gym-crazed culture people are often doing themselves more harm than good. Over-exercising is very common and results in catabolising your valuable muscle tissue, decreasing your motivation and can even give you flu-like symptoms, making you feel quite unwell.

The secret is: always choose exercise you enjoy! If you do this you will feel motivated to exercise. If you dislike certain exercise, you will not keep at it for long. Remember, you are trying to create a LIFESTYLE not an on-off exercise routine.

Choose a variety of exercises. Boredom is a quick way to lose interest in exercise. Find at least 3 exercises you really enjoy and do whichever one you feel like on a particular day.

Try to avoid routines as routines make exercise boring very quickly. Exercise when you feel like doing it, even if it's only twice a week on average.

Experiment! How often do you really need to exercise to gain or maintain muscle and fitness and to increase your metabolic rate?

How do I increase my metabolic rate?

Basal metabolic rate (BMR), and the closely related resting metabolic rate (RMR), is the amount of energy expended while at rest in a neutrally temperate environment. BMR decreases with age and with the loss of lean body mass.

Here is another secret: Increasing muscle mass increases BMR. No, you don't have to become a body-builder but you need to be working with weights or resistance exercise to increase muscle strength and tone.

Aerobic fitness level, a product of cardiovascular exercise, while previously thought to have an effect on BMR, has been shown not to correlate with BMR.

Over-exercising, especially with cardiovascular exercise, may catabolise muscle tissue thus decreasing your BMR. However some cardiovascular exercise is essential for heart, lungs, fitness and general health and well-being.

What is a set-point?

Your body likes a feeling of security, so it sets a stable point of weight and fat. This is called a set-point. If you try a radical diet and you lose a lot of weight, you will notice that you put the weight rapidly back on! This is because the body is holding on to its stable set-point.

Your set-point moves very gradually over time. As you slowly lose weight and fat, your set-point shifts gradually downward. The body is very resistant to sudden and rapid changes.

This is why yo-yo dieting is a waste of time. You need to slowly and gradually lose weight and your body will move its set-point slowly down, giving you a new lighter set-point.

Sometimes you lose a fair amount of weight gradually and safely, and then you seem to plateau. Nothing you do seems to lose any more weight. This occurs when the body is holding on to a new set-point. Sometimes the body says "Ok, I have moved my set-point but I am not prepared to go any further".

Be patient! Weight loss occurs in leaps and plateaus; it is never a straight descent. Especially if you are a woman, as hormonal changes in the monthly cycle affect the process.

Do I have to go on another diet?

Diets are bad news! Diets are unhealthy and a waste of time and should be avoided!

What you need is an EATING LIFESTYLE: a new way of eating, the right type of foods, a style of eating and living that you move into permanently. You need to make some healthy choices, and get committed to a new healthy lifestyle now.

What is the glycaemic index (GI)?

This is the most important information you need to learn! Science has proven that low GI, slowly digested carbohydrates are key to healthy and sustained weight loss. Buy a book that teaches you about the glycaemic index and buy a GI cookbook. I highly recommend the GI books written by Rick Gallop. My favourite GI books may be viewed at the health category of the Soul Therapy Book Shop (see button at top of the page).

What about the cravings?

Your body is usually surprised when you first start a new eating plan, and may give out hunger pangs and cravings. However, these only last a few days until your body settles.

Regular and repetitive cravings usually stem from poor nutrition. Modern food is calorie-rich (weight-gaining) and nutrient-poor (not nourishing). Your body is often desperately craving the vital nutrients that are missing in your body. Pollution and modern farming methods have decimated or stripped our food of essential health-giving nutrients.

You absolutely need to be taking a multivitamin-multimineral supplement with your main meal. I prefer the Solgar range as they supply comprehensive and top-class supplements; however there are many other excellent vitamin and mineral suppliers.

Cravings are also minimised if you graze your food. This means eating small meals and snacks throughout the day instead of 2 or 3 big meals each day. Grazing stabilises your blood sugar and insulin levels, minimising cravings, mood swings and body fat production.

If you can afford it, shop for and eat organic food for a much healthier and tastier option.

Learn more about modern farming methods and how to eat more healthily by browsing through the health category of the Soul Therapy Book Shop (see button at top of page).

How do I measure my fat loss?

In the beginning of a new eating plan, the body often sheds a lot of water. If you weigh yourself on a scale, it appears you are losing weight but you are not losing fat!

If you start a new exercise programme, you often gain some muscle. Muscle weighs quite a bit, so if you weigh yourself on a scale, you may think you gave gained weight. Indeed, you have gained muscle weight but how do you know if you have lost fat?

My advice: stop weighing yourself! And therefore do not use your BMI to calculate your progress. Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both adult men and women.

The only way to measure your progress is to measure body fat percentage. A person's body fat percentage is the weight of the person's fat divided by the person's total body weight. This purely measures your fat, ignoring muscle, water and other confusing variables.

You need to purchase a body fat analyser or a Salter scale that has a body fat analyser built in. Salter scales are relatively inexpensive but worth the investment. These modern scales typically have electrodes hidden under the foot positions, and send a tiny electrical signal through your body to measure your body fat percentage.
